Built to last, built responsibly, built with the future in mind.
At JHA, sustainability is at the core of our approach. It is built into our process — we consider it our duty to build solid, long-lasting, low-energy buildings. We acknowledge the significant contribution of the construction industry to global carbon emissions and confront this reality consciously and with enthusiasm.
Our objective is to create architecturally ambitious buildings that also prioritise social and environmental responsibility. We believe these ideals go hand in hand, resulting in better buildings. We constantly push the boundaries of innovation, understanding the potential of emerging materials, technologies and performance metrics.
Four principles that guide every project.
We recognise the enduring value of sustainable building traditions shaped by generations of experience. We seek to modernise these traditions and be respectful, sensitive neighbours to the communities and sites where we work.
One of the most impactful actions we can take is simply to build less — or re-use. This means reduced construction footprints, minimised demolition and waste. We prioritise renovation over demolition wherever possible and recycle on-site materials, preserving a layer of the site’s history.
We incorporate thoughtful passive design into our buildings — thermal mass, insulation, double glazing, natural ventilation, rainwater collection and maximised natural light. We prioritise responsibly sourced materials and build structures that last and offer an exceptional living experience.
JHA advocates for all-electric buildings, discouraging non-renewable fossil fuels. Many of our projects are operationally carbon-neutral, relying on solar panels, battery storage and heat pumps. Building smart requires upfront investment but pays dividends in long-term running costs.
We minimise our impact on the places and landscapes we touch. Our designs integrate with landscapes, courtyards and gardens, allowing for natural light, air and a connection to the outdoors. We prioritise natural and renewable materials to create buildings that harmonise with their surroundings.
Newington House
At Newington House we retrofitted an entire Victorian townhouse: reusing the existing brick structure, improving thermal performance throughout, eliminating gas and specifying low-energy systems. The result was a significantly reduced carbon footprint — and a better building.
