Joshua Heasman Architects are working on a new build villa on the south coast of Lombok, Indonesia, one of the most naturally beautiful coastlines in South East Asia. The site sits above the bay with long views across the water.

The project shows how the practice works away from London. We visit the site, and we stay in regular contact with the team on the ground between visits. Working remotely demands clear communication, precise documentation and trusted local partnerships, all of which we have developed through this project.

The villa is designed to cool itself. Deep shade, cross ventilation and an orientation set to the prevailing breeze do the work that mechanical cooling would otherwise do, which keeps the building low energy and simple to run. We specify materials we can control, so quality is set on site rather than assumed, and the money goes into things that last. The villa is largely self sufficient.

It is a Villa designed to be lived in through all seasons, and to make the most of the landscape it sits within.
